“For decades, Coldstream Canyon has drawn hikers, mountain bikers, bird watchers and backpackers to one of Truckee’s most scenic landscapes,” reporter Petra Molina wrote in a recent Sierra Sun article on TRWC restoration in Coldstream Canyon. “But beneath its recreational appeal lies a watershed shaped by more than a century of human disturbance.”
The article highlighted TRWC’s 2024 restoration project, which restored 50 acres of stream channel and riparian floodplain along a one-mile reach of Cold Creek and repaired 13 miles of dirt road drainage to prevent excess sediment runoff. As a result, high flows from snowmelt can now slow down and spread across the landscape, reducing sediment, improving riparian (or water-adjacent) habitat, and expanding wetland and floodplain area.
